TIEPOLO. Etching plates from the Museo Correr Collection.

Four Plates of Paintings by Giandomenico Tiepolo

Alongside the Tiepolo plates, the Museo Correr also possesses a further 4 plates with reproductions of Giandomenico Tiepolo’s paintings; originally used in the workshop of the Venetian printer Joseph Wagner, these were purchased in 1901. Each one of them deals with the theme of the charlatan or confidence-trickster, but unlike the paintings on which they are based, they also contain a verse commentary that points the lesson and moral they are supposed to illustrate. The two plates of The Charlatan and The Ballad Singer, both dated 1777, give no name of the engraver (perhaps Wagner himself). The other two, printed in 1779, can be attributed: The Tooth-Puller was engraved by Fabio Berardi (Siena 1728 – Venice 1788) and The Charlatan by Cristoforo dall’Acqua (Vicenza, 1734-1787).
